Debunking 5 Synthetic Lawn Myths

Opinions on artificial turf have been mixed in the past, to say the least, but the technology has come a long way in the past few years. Whether you’re looking to drought-proof your yard or liven up a drab outdoor setting without ongoing maintenance, an artificial lawn might be the perfect option for you. Read on to find out why the critics are wrong.

Myth 1 – “Synthetic grass is toxic”

in fact, synthetic grass is completely safe and non-toxic. Infill is manufactured using silica, a naturally occurring type of sand, and crumb rubber. Before being used, the sand is washed and dried in a kiln. The crumb rubber comes from old tires. All metal is removed first, then the tires are cut into large chips before being put through a machine that mills them into tiny particles known as crumb rubber. No toxic substances are used to create the infill or final grass product.

Myth 2 – “Synthetic grass is not safe for the environment”

Wrong, it actually helps the environment by keeping old tires out of landfill and recycling them. Synthetic grass doesn’t require mowing, which cuts down on greenhouse emissions from equipment like lawn mowers and weed eaters. Synthetic grass needs no fertilisers or pesticides, saving the water supply from these chemicals.

Myth 3 – “Synthetic grass gets too hot”

While this may have been somewhat true back when artificial grass first became available on the market, it’s come a long way with many improvements. New products are used now to keep the grass from getting hot. Some synthetic grasses are equipped with technology that keeps it cool even in bright sunlight. So even if the grass gets a little warm, it will never be too hot to walk on.

Myth 4 – “Synthetic grass is too expensive”

While the purchase and installation costs may be costly initially, the long term benefits mean it pays for itself after a while. With no need for watering, mowing or spending money on lawn care, you will reap the benefits of your synthetic grass in a few short years.

Myth 5 – “Synthetic grass looks fake”

Synthetic grass has come a long way since it’s inception. These days synthetic grass offers variable blade lengths as well as different types of yarn and colours. You can also choose between high density and low density grass. The result is the grass looks and feels real.
